GOLF: Rewire Your Brain, Improve Your Game

Are You Motivated but Stuck?
If you are reading this you must be motivated to raise your game, get an edge, be the best, or simply BE AT YOUR BEST.
Common strategies to improve golfing performance involve:
- Train more/harder
- Train better (e.g. using a coach)
- Buy better clubs.

A whole field is under explored…
Results follow Performances.
Performances follow Behaviour (e.g. more training better/harder)
But what influences your Behaviour?
Your Mindset!
I suggest to temporarily leave the minefield and explore the mind field.
On this page I will cover several techniques you can use…

Self-Hypnosis
Self-Hypnosis is something we all do at some level, without realising it, from simple visualisation to advanced techniques. The silly thing is that when we are not aware of it, it’s easy to use negative hypnosis, i.e. to visualise failure. So we need to make sure we use it positively to feel, be and do your sport precisely the way you want.

In a famous study on the effect of mental imagery on free-throw performance, 120 subjects were randomly assigned in four groups:
- Mental practice only.
- Physical practice only.
- Both mental and physical practice.
- No practice.
The conclusion was that mental imagery alone did improve the score, but more interestingly, a combination of both physical and mental practice yielded the best result, significantly.
“Performance in sport is 10% physical and 90% psychological”
— Yogi Berra
Bio-Feedback (BFB) & Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
Over the years, I have helped golfers, athletes, actors, musicians or artists to enhance their performance. One of tools I use is the bio-feedback solution from the Institute of Heartmath, which has also been used by golfers such as Ian Woosnam or Laird Small (see article below).

The finger sensor monitors the heart rate and heart rate variability in real time. Trough games and audio/visual stimuli, the software then trains you to breathe and visualise, increasing your heart coherence, until you are “in the zone”.
After a while, you become aware enough to make the adjustments necessary to access the flow state, improving focus, self-control and performance. The impact is similar to that of meditation and also reduces anxiety.

Some related scientific studies:
- Reduction in symptoms of anxiety, stress, and sensation seeking and increases in total HRV, low-frequency HRV, and improved sport performance were observed. Source: Assisted HRV using BFB as a strategy to improve golf performance – Full PDF
- Low Frequency HRV may be associated with improved fine motor control, such as golf putting, under pressure circumstances. Source: State anxiety and low-frequency HRV variability in high-level amateur golfers while putting under pressure)
- Compared to novice golfers, the experienced and elite golfers showed better performance and reduced heart rate (HR), greater heart rate variability (HRV), pronounced HR deceleration prior to the putt, and a greater tendency to exhale prior to the putt. The attentional focus instructions also influenced HR and putting performance. Source: Cardiac and respiratory activity and golf putting performance under attentional focus instructions
Tiger Woods used hypnosis from the age of 13 to calm his mind, free it from worry, pressure, distraction and focus on the pleasure of the game.
Hypnosis
We all have massive untapped potential, and knowing how to access into your subconscious and change the “video” on every level. There is nothing more gratifying than getting past your fixed mental mindset to a growth mindset. Intelligence, talent, success, all of these attributes are not ‘fixed’, they are fluid and knowing how to grow that mindset is everything for your success, you must increase your belief that you can do this.
IT’S MORE THAN

IT’S ALSO ABOUT

- Understanding compartmentalisation
- Learning how to manipulate negative and positive hallucination when in the ‘flow’.
