What is Hypnosis & How does it work?
- Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state that we enter into throughout the day. We are constantly in and out of trance states it just depends on whether it’s a negative or a positive one.
- During Hypnosis, our brain waves alter, not unlike meditation, whereby we are in a heightened state of awareness, but deeply relaxed. We bypass the conscious mind and go straight to the unconscious, where all the memories and behaviour patterns are stored. We literally put in new ‘programmes’.
- Our unconscious mind contains unlimited potential for anything we desire in our lives. When we access it, with language, sounds and images, we can begin creating the life we want, by changing limiting patterns and beliefs to empowering ones.
- Using Hypnosis can often accelerate the process as we access the unconscious and the ‘gold’ that is locked in there: The gold that is our massive potential to realise our dreams.
- When we are in a relaxed state, mind and body, beneficial suggestions have much more chance of being accepted into the unconscious part of our mind. When you repeat the process (very regularly), you can perceive the changes in your life.
Is Clinical Hypnosis possible for me?

What will happen during a Clinical Hypnosis session?
- The first session will include a case history, including information on medication, family, lifestyle, concerns about presenting problem and expectation of therapy, then, if time allows, teach Self Hypnosis.
- After taking a case history, the following happens:
- The individual will sit in a comfortable chair and, with eyes closed, will be talked through a relaxing induction to begin closing down external awareness.
- Then further deepening of the relaxation process where the individual will begin focusing more inwardly. Sometimes, they will take a more active part in it, inasmuch, as they may be asked to visualise or sense something in particular.
- If at any time they want to terminate the session, they can, just by opening their eyes.
- At the end of the session, there may be a discussion about what was experienced, although this is not always necessary.
How many sessions will I need?
- It depends on the condition and the person and if any underlying conditions need to be cleared first. Often it only takes 1 to 4 sessions. After the initial session, we’ll know how many may be needed.
- Stop Smoking is a one-off session of 2 to 3 hours, using a multi-modal approach (Hypnosis, NLP, Coaching)
What are the guarantees it will work for me?
- I work under the strict rules and regulations of the BSCH Professional Hypnotherapy Code of Conduct that prevent me from guaranteeing any results, however here is what I can tell you:
- Clients have a high success rate if they do any work set for them and take responsibility for themselves.
- It’s a collaboration between client and therapist, with honesty at all times.
- 9 out of 10 clients come through referrals.
Do Private Health Insurance providers cover hypnotherapy?

Is Hypnotherapy via NHS possible?
- Yes, Hypnotherapy can be prescribed through the NHS. However, it will take some time to establish it as a regular NHS treatment.
- Since March 2004, a new mechanism called APMS (Alternative Provider Medical Route) has made it easier for NHS Doctors wishing to employ CAM (Complementary and Alternative Therapies) practitioners.
- If enough patients go to their NHS GPs or specialists and ask to be referred to a Hypnotherapist, this is bound to raise the level of awareness amongst GPs that you are gaining benefits from the treatments.
- Whether doctors believe in this treatment or not, if their patients are gaining benefits, surely a doctor has a duty to pay attention.
How to Ask your GP to refer you to a Hypnotherapist?
- I encourage you to ask your doctor for referrals via the NHS and give them the NHSTA details so they can verify I am a registered member of the Directory.
- You can ask for a reason if the doctor refuses to refer you. If you are dissatisfied with the doctor’s response, you can address your dissatisfaction with the local Primary Care Trust via the Patient Advice and Liaison Co-ordinator (PAL).
- This action will create a groundswell of opinion from the grassroots level, putting Hypnotherapy on the NHS agenda.
- The NHSTA has drafted a “model” letter for patients to send to the PAL in cases where they are encountering difficulties in obtaining complementary therapy (which can be downloaded from the NHSTA website).
- There is also an information sheet about the Directory for doctors (again, downloadable from the NHSTA website) that you can give to your GP.
